ACEC/Nebraska Awards
2018 Charles Durham Achievement Award

The Charles Durham Achievement Award was created to honor Charles Durham’s leadership in the engineering profession and his community stewardship through civic involvement. Durham served as chairman and CEO of Henningson, Durham and Richardson, (HDR) the international engineering and architectural firm headquartered in Omaha. Over the years, he and his wife Marge were active in their community serving in leadership roles with many community organizations and donating millions of dollars to worthy causes.

The ACEC Board of Directors is honored to announce the recipient of the Charles Durham Award this year. The award winner is Mike Gorman, Executive Vice President, Great Plains Regional Manager of Alfred Benesch & Company.

Mike Gorman started his career at the Iowa Department of Transportation after receiving his Construction Engineering degree from Iowa State University. While at the Iowa DOT, he was drawn to the relatively fast pace and human element of traffic engineering and transportation planning, making it his 39-year professional focus. Before moving to the private sector, he held public sector engineering positions for the City of Casper, Wyoming and City of Omaha.

Mike’s current position began with the former HWS Consulting Group as Transportation Services Manager. In 2010, as President of HWS, he helped guide the company through a successful merger with Alfred Benesch & Company, which is headquartered in Chicago. Mike is currently Executive Vice President and Great Plains Regional Manager. He also serves on the Benesch Board of Directors. He oversees all business development and operations activities in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Colorado.

Gorman is a graduate of Iowa State University (B.S. in Construction Engineering) and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (M.S. in Transportation Engineering). During his career he has been a member of multiple industry-related organizations serving on the board of directors and in leadership positions, including: the Institute of Transportation Engineers, American Public Works Association, and Omaha Engineer’s Club. Gorman has served on the Board of Directors of ACEC Nebraska and was president in 2005/6.
